H-Theorems from Macroscopic Autonomous Equations

چکیده
The H-theorem is an extension of the Second Law to a time-sequence of states that need not be equilibrium ones. In this paper we review and we rigorously establish the connection with macroscopic autonomy. If for a Hamiltonian dynamics for many particles, the macrostate evolves autonomously, then its entropy is non-decreasing as a consequence of Liouville’s theorem. That observation, made since long, is here rigorously analyzed with special care to reconcile the application of Liouville’s theorem (for a finite number of particles) with the condition of autonomous macroscopic evolution (sharp only in the limit of infinite scale separation); and to evaluate the presumed necessity of a semigroup property for the macroscopic evolution.

H-Theorems from Autonomous Equations
The H-theorem is an extension of the Second Law to a time-sequence of states that need not be equilibrium ones. In this paper we review and we rigorously establish the connection with macroscopic autonomy. If for a Hamiltonian dynamics for many particles, at all times the present macrostate determines the future macrostate, then its entropy is non-decreasing as a consequence of Liouville’s theo...
متن کاملON THE EXISTENCE OF PERIODIC SOLUTIONS FOR CERTAIN NON-LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
Here we consider some non-autonomous ordinary differential equations of order n and present some results and theorems on the existence of periodic solutions for them, which are sufficient conditions, section 1. Also we include generalizations of these results to vector differential equations and examinations of some practical examples by numerical simulation, section 2. For some special cases t...
متن کاملLocal and Global Existence of Solutions to Semilinear Parabolic Initial Value Problems
This paper is devoted to establishing local and global existence theorems for autonomous semilinear parabolic initial value problems. The local existence theorems do not require Lipchitz condition on nonlinear term. The global existence theorem is an extension of the well-known result of Fujita-Weissler for semilinear heat equations to general autonomous semilinear parabolic equations and systems.
متن کاملMICROSCOPIC REVERSIBILITY AND MACROSCOPIC BEHAVIOR : PHYSICAL EXPLANATIONS AND MATHEMATICAL DERIVATIONSJoel
The observed general time-asymmetric behavior of macroscopic systems|embodied in the second law of thermodynamics|arises naturally from time-symmetric microscopic laws due to the great disparity between macro and micro-scales. More speciic features of macroscopic evolution depend on the nature of the microscopic dynamics. In particular, short range interactions with good mixing properties lead,...
متن کاملMacroscopic limits for stochastic partial differential equations of McKean–Vlasov type
A class of quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs), driven by spatially correlated Brownian noise, is shown to become macroscopic (i.e., deterministic), as the length of the correlations tends to 0. The limit is the solution of a quasilinear partial differential equation. The quasilinear SPDEs are obtained as a continuum limit from the empirical distribution of a large num...
